GST e-Way Bill DSC: When It's Mandatory in 2026
Whether e-Way bills need a Digital Signature Certificate in 2026 — when it's mandatory, when OTP-based auth is enough, and how bulk generators should be set up.
e-Way bills authenticate movement of goods above the notified value threshold. In 2026 the authentication choice — OTP vs DSC — depends less on regulation and more on volume.
OTP-based auth
Sufficient for taxpayers generating a handful of e-Way bills per week. Log in, generate the bill, authenticate with OTP to the registered mobile. Slower and rate-limited when you cross ~50 bills / day.
DSC-based auth
Required in practice for API-integrated ERPs, GSPs and bulk generators. The DSC is registered once on the e-Way Bill portal; every subsequent bill is signed programmatically.
Which DSC to use
Class 3 Organisation DSC in the company's name — same one you use for GST returns. For proprietors, Class 3 Individual DSC works.
Registration on the e-Way Bill portal
- Log in with your GSTIN credentials.
- Registration → For DSC → Select the certificate from emSigner.
- Test with one bill before switching your ERP integration.
For Bangalore transporters and manufacturers, we help wire the DSC into Tally / SAP / Zoho e-Way Bill modules — book a session via the contact page.
