Class 3 DSC with USB Token vs Other Options: Comparison & Buyer's Checklist (2026)

Class 3 DSC on a USB token vs soft certificates, mobile-based signatures and eSign — how they compare, what's legally accepted, and a checklist to run before you buy.

Not every 'digital signature' on the market is the same product. Before you pay for one, it helps to know what a Class 3 DSC on a USB token actually gives you compared to soft certificates, mobile signatures, and Aadhaar-based eSign — and what to verify before handing over money. This guide sits alongside our Class 3 DSC in Bangalore pillar.

The four options in the Indian market

  • Class 3 DSC on a FIPS-compliant USB Crypto Token — the default for MCA, GST for companies, income tax, tenders, DGFT, ICEGATE and EPFO.
  • Soft certificate (.pfx file on your machine) — no longer permitted for MCA / GST since the shift to Class 3-only issuance; the CCA mandates hardware storage.
  • Mobile-based signature / HYP token app — a newer option where the DSC is bound to a mobile HSM; supported by some CAs but not universally accepted by government portals yet.
  • Aadhaar eSign — an OTP-triggered one-time signature under the eSign framework. Legally valid, but not accepted on MCA21, and limited on GST and DGFT.

Side-by-side comparison

Class 3 DSC on USB Token

  • Validity: 1, 2 or 3 years
  • Accepted on: MCA, GST, Income Tax, Tenders, DGFT, ICEGATE, EPFO, TRACES, PF, ESIC — every major portal
  • Security: FIPS 140-2 Level 2, non-exportable private key
  • Use case: everything, especially recurring signatories
  • Downside: needs a physical token, USB port, driver install

Soft certificate (.pfx)

  • No longer permitted for new issuance — Class 3 requires hardware storage
  • Legacy Class 2 soft certs have expired
  • Do not buy — anyone selling this today is misrepresenting the product

Mobile HSM signature (e.g. eMudhra HYP, Capricorn Mobile)

  • Validity: 1–2 years
  • Accepted on: some portals (Income Tax works reliably; MCA and GST support is limited or in rollout)
  • Security: private key inside a mobile HSM app, PIN + biometric unlock
  • Use case: signatories who travel and cannot carry a USB token
  • Downside: not yet a full replacement — most CAs still recommend a token as primary

Aadhaar eSign

  • Validity: single-use (each signature is a fresh OTP-triggered issuance)
  • Accepted on: NSDL, some fintech / KYC flows, agreements
  • Not accepted on: MCA21, tenders, DGFT, most GST filings
  • Use case: one-off document signing without owning a DSC
  • Downside: needs Aadhaar + linked mobile every time; not viable for regular filings

Which USB tokens are actually accepted?

Government portals expect a FIPS 140-2 Level 2 (or higher) crypto token. The models you'll see most often in Bangalore:

  • ePass 2003 Auto — the most common, works with almost every CA and portal
  • Watchdata ProxKey — reliable, good driver support on Windows 11 and macOS
  • HYP2003 — commonly issued with Capricorn certificates
  • Trust Key — supported by MCA and GST, occasionally quirky on older laptops

Avoid unbranded 'crypto tokens' from marketplace sellers — they may not carry a valid FIPS certification and government portals reject them silently.

Buyer's checklist — run this before you pay

  1. Is the certificate Class 3? (If a seller still lists 'Class 2', walk away.)
  2. Is it issued by a CCA-licensed Certifying Authority — eMudhra, Capricorn, Sify, VSign, Pantasign, IDSign, XtraTrust, ProDigiSign?
  3. Is the PAN name on the DSC exactly matching your PAN card (spellings, initials, no shortened forms)?
  4. Is a FIPS 140-2 Level 2 USB token included and shipped? (Or reused from a previous DSC — confirm compatibility.)
  5. Is the validity 1, 2 or 3 years — and does the price match the validity you chose?
  6. Does the seller provide the token driver, emSigner setup help, and MCA/GST registration support?
  7. Is renewal reminder / support included before expiry?
  8. Is there a written invoice with GST number and clear breakdown of certificate + token + service?
  9. Does the seller do the video verification themselves in Bangalore, or route it to a third-party partner? (In-house is faster and safer.)
  10. For Company / LLP directors — has the seller confirmed the DSC will be registered against your DIN on MCA21 after issuance?

When should you pick each option?

  • You file MCA, GST or tenders regularly → Class 3 DSC on USB token, no exceptions.
  • You're a director who travels constantly and hates carrying a token → discuss mobile HSM as a secondary; keep the token as primary.
  • You need to sign one contract this month and will never sign digitally again → Aadhaar eSign is fine.
  • You saw a cheap 'soft DSC' online → don't buy; it is either expired legacy or a scam.

Which one does Vowel Enterprises recommend?

For 95% of the Bangalore businesses we work with — companies, LLPs, MSMEs, tax professionals, exporters, government contractors — a Class 3 Individual DSC on an ePass 2003 or Watchdata token, with 2-year validity, is the right buy. It works on every portal you're likely to ever touch, has predictable renewal costs, and doesn't rely on Aadhaar OTPs on the 20th of the month.
